Gourmet Wine Escape | Tour Itinerary

Day 1 – Saturday, August 30

Our tour begins today in Bordeaux City at the elegant Grand Hotel Français, located in the heart of the city's Golden Triangle. Check-in and settle in before meeting the group at 6pm in the hotel bar for a welcome drink. From there, we’ll head to Le Bouchon Bordelais, a local gem known for its warm hospitality and excellent food. By the time you leave, you’ll feel like part of the family, thanks to our wonderful host, Fanny.

Day 2 – Sunday, August 31

After breakfast, we’ll set off for the UNESCO-listed town of Saint-Émilion, a region renowned for its vineyards, ancient underground cellars, and cobbled streets.

Our day includes a guided tour of the historic underground caves, originally excavated by the Romans for construction and later repurposed for wine storage, chapels, and catacombs. Saint-Émilion became a pilgrimage site in the 8th century and has been a centre for winemaking ever since.

We’ll enjoy lunch and a wine tasting at La Terrasse Rouge, a winery restaurant near Saint-Émilion, before returning to our hotel. Later, join us for evening drinks at the hotel bar, followed by a free evening to explore the local dining scene.

Breakfast and lunch provided

Day 3 – Monday, September 1

After breakfast and a mid-morning checkout, we head to the Médoc, where we’ll stay at Château Ormes de Pez, a beautiful estate set among the vines of Saint-Estèphe.

On the way, we’ll stop for a wine tasting and lunch at Château Beychevelle, known for its exceptional wines and elegant setting. Upon arrival at our accommodation, take some time to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Dinner is not provided this evening, but we can pick up provisions for a relaxed meal at the château, or I can arrange transport to a nearby restaurant.

Breakfast and lunch provided

Day 4 – Tuesday, September 2

After breakfast, we’ll explore the wild coastline of the Arcachon Basin, heading to Lège-Cap-Ferret for lunch at the iconic Chez Hortense. Beforehand, there’s an option to visit the Dune du Pilat, the tallest sand dune in Europe, which acts as a natural barrier protecting the peninsula from Atlantic storms.

On our return, we’ll stop at the oyster leases in Andernos, where you may wish to pick up some oysters or fresh seafood for dinner. Alternatively, you can dine at a nearby restaurant.

Bring your swimmers if you fancy a dip in the Atlantic.

This morning, we’ll take a short drive to Sarlat, home to one of the most famous markets in France. Bustling with local producers, fragrant spices, fresh cheeses, and regional delicacies, it’s the perfect place to soak up the sights, sounds, and flavours of the Périgord Noir.

With its winding cobbled streets, medieval architecture, and rich history inviting you to explore at your own pace. Take time to browse the market stalls, discover hidden courtyards, or simply enjoy the lively atmosphere before we return to the château.

Day 9 – Sunday, September 7

After an early breakfast, we’ll check out and begin our journey north to the Loire Valley, a region rich in history, grand châteaux, and world-class wines.

Along the way, we’ll stop in Limoges to explore its famous covered market, where you can browse local specialties, sample regional delicacies, and grab a bite to eat from one of the bustling food stalls.

Day 11 – Tuesday, September 9

Our journey continues toward Sancerre, with a stop in Chemery to visit winemaker Philippe, a friend I worked with during the 2003 vintage.

Philippe’s tasting room is an incredible underground cave, originally carved out when stone was mined to build Château de Blois. We’ll enjoy a light snack and wine tasting, before heading to Alphonse Mellot’s cellar in Sancerre to sample his wines, now crafted by the 19th-generation winemaker.

Dinner is at your leisure in the village of Sancerre or at our hotel.

Today begins with a cheese tasting at Fromagerie Dubois-Boulay in Chavignol, followed by a wine tasting at Clos Henri Bourgeois.

The afternoon is yours to soak up the views from Sancerre or explore the charming village.

Day 13, Thursday, September 11th

Our final stop is Le Doyenné in Saint-Vrain, where we’ll stay in a beautifully restored barn-style accommodation and enjoy a memorable meal by Australian chefs James Henry and Shaun Kelly.
